Take a look e.g. to AbstractAspectizedEndpointServlet + AbstractEndpointServlet how they're leveraging endpoint state.
AbstractEndpointServlet is calling endpoint start()/stop() template methods to simulate endpoint start/stop events.
These ugly hacks needs to be removed and proper LifecycleDeploymentAspect or something like that needs to be introduced.
