This is a weird question.. jBPM is a java library.. so that means that if
you have a java application
you just use jbpm as a library from your application. So yes.. you will
interact via the API.

It depends on what do you want to do. Usually a retrying mechanism needs to
be implemented or reused from something like JMS to retry in case of
failure.
