The jboss-as plugin uses the JBoss AS Management API - https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/AS7/Management+API+reference - to deploy your war. It doesn't actually put the deployment into a directory, as it uses this API to do the deployment.

There is a little too much magic underneath, and so we end up debugging the deployment step.
