I've revisited the mod_jk/mod_cluster performance benchmarks, this time with multiple contexts (mod_cluster's weak spot). There were 5 workers, 61 deployed contexts each. The *{{sessions}}* label represents the number of active clients, keeping sessions and sending 1 request per second each.

Given the additional logic mod_cluster computes on the balancer, I believe it is actually not a fair comparison though. One should be comparing apples to apples which, in this case, does not hold, so the mod_jk data should be considered only as a reference.
