Regarding negotiation: How about sticking to the simple:
 * Worker --> Balancer: With {{INFO}} message offers a list of supported protocol versions
 * Balancer --> Worker: The response contains either the highest common protocol version or an error code, e.g. {{406 Not Acceptable}}...
