memory creeps up

The memory that is available to the JVM is always limited, if you
don't specify it, defaults are used (wasn't it 64M for -client and
256M for -server? I forgot but that is easy to find in the web).
>From my personal experience I can say that Netty itself doesn't use a
lot of cpu time at all, but own logic and/or misuage of Netty can do.
I should get familiar with a profiler and find what is going on in
your app.
