In terms of the normal system config tunings, those default to a sort of middle ground that's good for desktop systems and old style servers (e.g., thread-per-io/request apache). These new fangled huge # of connections approaches aren't the norm even on most servers so the defaults seem fairly reasonable.

In terms of needing to hack libevent to be able to spec the source address, it's another case of relatively few people needing that sort of thing. And do note that that article is almost 3 years old now.
