Not able to reproduce the problem using the following code:
			<h:form>
				<h:panelGroup id="group">

					<f:verbatim>
						<script>
							alert('Hi!');
						</script>
					</f:verbatim>

				</h:panelGroup>		
			
				<a4j:commandButton value="action" reRender="group" />
			</h:form>

Could you please provide some more info?
