Devon, 

I've tried to set it to -16000px, this made it work slightly better (I can see the panel), but the page isn't redrawn properly when I move panel. 

This left offset is aimed to put focus-capturing link elements out of the view area, so the value of screen scroll width + 20-30 px should be enough to hide them. However I'm not absolutely sure how this will do and I'm far from the Mac right now and cannot check that. I'll check tomorrow if I get some time.
