Nick: I was using the tooltips similar to the dataTable with modal panel example - as larger and skinnable Alt text for the button icons. All of the tips for one button type said the same thing; there is no need to rerender them to update content.

For the time being, I've disabled those tooltips and replaced them with Alt text. My (IE7Pro generated) source size was cut in half as soon as I did it.
