We did not have time to discuss in team meeting, but I think there is an issue here.  It is not selectFirst - that is doing what it is supposed to.  

The issue is that if "defaultLabel" is not set then the first entry from the selectItems should be shown as it is for h:selectOneMenu.  

So for example in the showcase page http://richfaces-showcase.appspot.com/richfaces/component-sample.jsf?demo=select&skin=emeraldTown
  - the first select should have "option 1" showing because it does not set defaultLabel.
