Currently works as  Pavel described(and as worked in 3.3.x). style and styleClass applied correctly to the popup element. Minor issue: class applied twice to span and to popup.

Hovewer I agree that style and styleClass has to be applied to root span element for consistency and to avoid confusion. 
So we need to provide two new attributes popupClass and popupStyle which will act as current ones.
And change style and styleClass to be applied to the root span.
