The only UIComponent that works and I've found so far is h:form.

In the meantime I found a workaround in using JSTL tags. Something like  

<c:if test="#{renderCondition}"> ...<r:datatable.../> </c:if>

does the trick.

In that case the table's value attribute is of course not evaluated.
