The default behavoiur of the autocomplete component has @selectFirst=_true_.  However, this default value does not work with metamer, as metamer sets the value using EL, and the JSF EL interprets _null_ EL as _false_.  To mimick the out-of-the-box behaviour of the autocomplete component, one must explicitly set @selectFirst=_true_.

Once you set @selectFist=_true_ in metamer, the behavior you are describing is achieved for @autofill=_true_.
