we also had some performance problems with the bundled  1.6.0.3,.. after replacing it with 1.6.1 everything works like a charme.

(the DOMContentLoaded detection registers a timer which is never cleared unter 1.6.0.3. In our Portlet environment this leads to 1 never cleared timer per portlet...)
