I haven't yet looked at your sample app, but checking with the RichFaces showcase [autocomplete sample|http://showcase.richfaces.org/richfaces/component-sample.jsf?demo=autocomplete&skin=blueSky] (try sample 2 on that page with minChars="1") it seems to be working.

Can you compare your sample code to what's in the showcase to see if possibly something else is interfering?
