Ok, forget that workaround. The richFaces 4 way of doing this is to use the `RichFaces.$` function to get a refernece to the RichFaces component object from a DOM id, as in:

{code}
<a4j:commandButton id="issueButton"
    onclick="alert('tableId is: editMarginModal${tableId}');"
    oncomplete="RichFaces.$('editMarginModal${tableId}').show()"
    action="#{richBean.helloWorld(margin)}"
    image="img/iconEdit.png"
    render="editMarginModal${tableId}">
</a4j:commandButton>
{code}

> a4j:commandButton does not evaluate value expressions in “oncomplete” attribute.

> The following code works in RF 3, but not in RF 4. The "tableId" does not evaluate to a value in "oncomplete" attribute.
> {code}
> <a4j:commandButton id="issueButton"
> 				onclick="alert('tableId is: editMarginModal${tableId}');"
> 				oncomplete="#{rich:component('editMarginModal${tableId}')}.show()"
> 				action="#{richBean.helloWorld(margin)}"
> 				image="img/iconEdit.png"
> 				render="editMarginModal${tableId}">
> 			</a4j:commandButton>
> {code}
