Sean, I reviewed the documentation and found the following issues:
1.for  drop down menu component
*attribute "value" is renamed to label 
*"submitMode" is renamed to "mode"
*"event" attribute is renamed to "eventShow"
* now values in position attributes (jointPoint and directions) are unified:
  +"auto"
  +"topLeft"
  +"topRight"
  +"bottomLeft"
  +"bottomRight"
  +"autoLeft"
  +"autoRight"
  +"topAuto"
  +"bottomAuto"
* new for 4.0 :
  *key navigation
  *client api (more info on wiki : http://community.jboss.org/wiki/MenusmigrationtoRichFaces4)
    the show(), hide(), activateItem(menuItemId)
2. for menu item
*attribute "value" is renamed to label 
*menu item can be used as separate component, e. g. inside toolbar, without parent drop down menu
3. for menu group
The positioning of group is going on like in menu: with jointPoint and direction attributes help
