The problem was that the fix for this was applied only to RF 5 branch (it was done by JS instead of selenium - [link|https://github.com/richfaces/richfaces/blob/master/build/page-fragments/src/main/java/org/richfaces/fragment/editor/RichFacesEditor.java#L86]).
I applied the same changes to RF 4 branches and the tests are now successful.
