Some time ago, I had to decide between git and hg for my personal  
projects.  I opted to go with hg because I felt the docs were better (http://hgbook.red-bean.com/ 
, for example) and the Windows support for hg was much better at the  
time (luckily, that's no longer an issue for me, as I'm not using  
Windows ATM :).  For what it's worth, some people at my local JUG use  
git and have complained about the inconsistency between one command  
and another.  I can neither confirm nor deny, as I've never used git  
in anger.  I am, though, quite happy with Mercurial.  Also, for what  
it's worth, it's my understanding that GlassFish (in addition to  
NetBeans, OpenJDK, etc) will be moving to hg at some point, so there  
are major projects on both systems.

With regard to hosting, I'm using kenai.com for Mojarra Scales and  
FacesTester, and I've been really happy with it.  I get a nice wiki,  
hg (or git or svn or cvs), and JIRA.  I realize there may be concerns  
with kenai of various sorts, so, if that's not an option,  
bitbucket.org is one option for hosting projects.  The Mercurial
