I had a look at integrating this into SeamFilter, however the tuckey.org one is GPL (that's the one you're using Christian) so it really only leaves us with this one which is LGPL: http://software.softeu.cz/rewriter.
It looks pretty straight forward, and is supposed to be similar to mod_rewrite for Apache HTTPD. If no-one has any objections, I'll look at integrating this and also see if we can do something to integrate it nicely with pages.xml.
