I thought of that as well, but:

- It doesn't take into account enumerations.

- Localization would be trickier (NLSSORT...)

- Model values are not always displayed directly:

<s:selectItems value="#{persons}" var="person" label="#{person.lastName}, #{person.firstName}" />
<s:selectItems value="#{titles}" var="title" label="#{messages[title]}" />

- I don't want to have (too much) display logic in my JSF backing beans.

- The view can be updated easily, without requiring code / query changes.
