Some updates after checking the GWT source code for both 1.3.3 and 1.4.10:

in GWT 1.3.3, the response payload string begins with {OK} and {EX} for success and failure respectively;
in GWT 1.4.10, the response payload string begins with //OK and //EX for success and failure respectively;
