Just to throw some coals on this fire, the RichFaces-VPE can successfully turn a seam-gen created project into an Eclipse WTP project. I just tried it today. Now, it may not deploy correctly because the structure is different, but you can do all the fancy Eclipse things like get autocompletion for JSF component tags and EL expressions, and even edit the JSF faces-config.xml and Seam components.xml. I'm not arguing that this is sufficient to fix this issue, but I am just saying...it works.
