Implemented this and followed RFC 2822 for Message-ID/In-Reply-To/References header generation. However, gmail still does not display threads properly. Apple Mail and Thunderbird do, so this is (as other hints I found) a problem well known with gmail. They seem to rely on a broken routine that parses subjects and some of the headers. Nothing we can do about that and no, we are not changing the subjects for gmail. Use a real MUA.
