Darryl Smith commented on JBSEAM-2393:

A cleaner version of the pattern:

Pattern.compile( "^\\s*(?:(?:((?:lower|upper){1}+\\s*\\(\\s*(?:\\w)+(?:\\.\\w+)*\\s*\\))|(?:\\w)+(?:\\.\\w+)*)(?:\\s*(?:asc|desc)+)?(?:\\s*,\\s*)?)+\\s*$" );

Pattern.compile( "^\\s*(?:(?:((?:lower|upper){1}+\\s*\\(\\s*(?:\\w)+(?:\\.\\w+)*\\s*\\))|(?:\\w)+(?:\\.\\w+)*)\\s*(?:asc|desc)?\\s*,?\\s*)+$" );

NOTE: this would also require modifications setOrder as this regex will not work with empty strings e.g "" or " "

> In o.j.s.framework.Query
> private static final Pattern ORDER_CLAUSE_PATTERN = Pattern.compile("^[\\w\\.,\\s]*$");
> while this works with simple cases e.g. v.jobTitle asc
> it fails on lower(v.jobTitle) asc, is the proper way to order by a character field on many databases
