Since these are public API providing similar methods for sake of usability in a single application leads to fine grained API, which poses confusion and maintenance  in other places. In my opinion we should fix the current methods if they are not working, not introduce new ones which are similar to old one.  Otherwise, we should consider deprecating the current methods and then introduce new ones. 

All I can see from your comment is the above "updateProperties" identifier need to work without host/vm as the identifiers, is there anything else I am missing?
