In http://teiid.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html Designer is deliberately removed from the workflow diagram and the "pros" comment below states "No Teiid Designer tool to use, cutting down on time and learning curve with Designer"
This coupled with the fact that Designer wasn't part of the subsequent 7.0 release made me think it was no longer a supported feature. 

Looks like I got the wrong impression so apologies for the confusion.
