The select transformation is the view definition.  Transformation was the metamatrix term for the SQL underlying any virtual object.

Without a view definition the table record is not a view and cannot be materialized.  It sounds like you may be wanting to use alter view or another metadata loading mechanism to bring your definition into the runtime.  From there materialization will work as expected.
