Does it matter what JRE - as Java support was added for clients in Java 7, and server support in 8 - but only with specialized SSL handling https://github.com/grahamedgecombe/netty-sni-example/blob/master/src/main/java/SniKeyManager.java 

Or perhaps in general is there documentation on what is needed?

At worst this would need to added reflectively as we don't yet require Java 8 for the build.
