I agree.  Building up is much more successful, if you have a tool that can solve the graph.

Start with the modules that match the <extension> modules you need, and walk from there, adding whatever is required, and you should get a good solution that is the minimum (modulo over-zealous dependencies) for what you’re trying to do.
