I agree with that point, it would make fixes a bit more harder to backport. Or at least they would require more attention.

Also it would bring issue with the implementation of the new integration development.

Personally the only feature I would like from Java 5 are annotations. So perhaps we could just use annotations when necessary and not use generics ?
