The solution has been applied to branches 2.2 and 2.x.

Testing:  

In org.jboss.test.remoting.ssl.emptystore.EmptyStoreTestCase.testNONEKeyStore(), the setting of dummy passwords, which masked the NPE, has been eliminated.
