Yes, so it seems. Like already mentioned, accessing globals from within the
work item handler might hamper the 'pluggability' requirement of handlers.

One method of reading external data and outputting data would be to use the
'Parameter Mapping' and 'Result Mapping' feature of handlers. I personally
haven't used it but I think it is something which might just solve your
problem.
