Indeed it is not used/explained in curriculumCourseSolverConfig.xml, refer to
curriculumCourseBenchmarkSolverConfig.xml which does explicitly use the 2
planning variables. 

I assume that in curriculumCourseSolverConfig.xml implicit defaults apply.
