Hi,
I have been working of the quickstarts (JBESB-490) and will try to check-in tonight. The
current solution will demonstrate how to run the ESB standalone and by deploying a .esb
archive. Should the SAR deployment option still be used. It is currently
"deprecated" according to the build.xml. I have tried to add a message when the
quickstart does not support a certain deployment.
I could check this in and perhaps you could take a look at what's there and give me
some feedback and we can work our way from there?

SAR deployment is marked as "deprecated" in the comments of the base-build.xml
as Daniel mentions.
However, we still want AS deployment as well as ESB deployment (for when ESB is running as
a service of the AS). Therefore we should modify the base-build.xml to reflect this
capability. Right now it appears that AS deployment is not supported/deprecated which is
not true.

profile of the AS.

I just had a thought, we can leave the ant target as "deployToESB" for both ESB
Server & ESB within AS options.
However, I believe there is a classpath problem that will need to be corrected when
testing and support those 2 options. Plus I think the deprecated section can just be
yanked out since this is for example/educational purposes and the comments leads to
confusion.
The current "deploy" target still maps to StandaloneBootStrapper deployment.

All quickstart work with the standealone ESB for both JBossMQ/JBossMessaging.
AS deployment (previously known as SAR deployment)
Is this the deployment of .esb archives? The current packaging only uses jbm queue
definitions. We could add jbmq too, and package the correct queue file depending what the
jboss server supports.
ESB server deployment (new in 4.2)
I thought this was the same as the AS deployment? Could someone explain how this differs
or point me to the docs.

yes and no.
the .esb archive works for both AS (ESB running within AS, previously known as SAR
deployment) and ESB Server.
The ESB Server is a new 4.2 beast that is based on the JMX Microkernel. If you
successfully pull from SVN, run ant clean, compile, dist then you get a folder called
"jbossesb-server-4.2.MR1" in the build folder. This is the ESB Server and you
can run it by executing run.bat (bin sub-folder).
Note: you'll need to have your AS turned off before running the ESB Server (and vice
versa). Plus the ESB Server only supports JBoss Messaging, not JBoss MQ.
The only real trick between ESB Server and AS (ESB within AS) deployments are related to
classpath issues and simply need to be debugged.

This is my fault I believe, apologies for this.
AS deployment and ESB server deployment (what I have been calling standalone ESB server)
both take .esb files and are different profiles of the AS.
There are a couple of differences between the two though, AS contains JBMQ and ejb3
whereas ESB server contains JBM.
War deployment has been written for tomcat but I have a task to verify this and extend it
to other containers.

Thanks, I think I get it now.
I have tested deploying the quickstarts to the ESB Server and that works fine.
Running them all in StandeAloneBootStrapper mode also works.
I still have to test them agains running in JBoss AS with JBossMQ. Running them against a
JBoss AS with JBoss Messaging should be equivlent to running agains the ESB Server if I am
not misstaken. I have not tested deploying to tomcat not tested on windows yet.
Should I check in what I have done? All quickstarts have been updated to include the
base-build.xml which what my original task was. This would give you guys the chance to
comment, but might mean that some things are checked in untested.

I just commited the work (Committed revision 11233 ).
Please note that the business_service quickstart is not deploying correctly. But you
should be able to take a look at the other quickstarts.
My thoughts were that it should be enough for a new user to cd to one of the quickstarts
directories and run 'ant -p'. This will bring up the project help. Running
'ant help' will display the specific readme.txt for the quickstart. Running
'ant help-quickstarts' will bring up general information and prerequisites.
I have tried to clean up the root of the quickstart folder. I now only contains
quickstarts, a readme.txt ( which we might be able to remove of a least shorten), and a
conf directory. The conf directory contains the quickstart.properties, base-build.xml, a
jms folder which contains jms destination definitions for JBM and JBossMQ, and a
readme.txt file for the quickstarts.
Please read through conf/readme.txt for information about how properties are used and if
this is a good ide or not.

Hi Burr,
I just downloaded the jbossesb-server-4.2MR2.zip and tried it and I
noticed that the ant targets do not work. This is my fault. When I
tested this I always assumed that there would either be a
build/jbossesb/lib or a lib/ directory in the directory to which the
bundle had been unzipped. I assumed this by looking at the previous
release but I realize now that this bundle was not available then.
I'll look into this staight away. Really sorry about this.

I just checked in a updated base-build.xml file.
Can you confirm or correct the following statements about the directory layouts for
different distributions:
Directory for esb jar files:
Source distribution=${product.dir}/build/jbossesb/lib
Bundled
distribution=${org.jboss.esb.server.home}/server/${org.jboss.esb.server.config}/deploy/jbossesb.sar/lib
GA = ${product.dir}/lib
Directory with ext jar files:
Source distribution=${product}/lib/ext
Bundled
distribution=${org.jboss.esb.server.home}/server/${org.jboss.esb.server.config}/deploy/jbossesb.sar/lib
GA=${product.dir}/lib
I think what confused me a bit was that the GA release had a lib directory which the
bundled version does not. Also that for the bundled server distribution the ext jar files
are in the jbossesb.sar/lib directory.
I have tested this with the bundled version and the source dist using the code in the
trunk. Could you double check this so that I have not missed anything.
Would also be great if we could continue working on
http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBESB-519 to set the names for the different ways to
run/deploy and also verify that we have covered all types of distributions so we can avoid
this in the future.
