I managed to reproduce this today with TD 8.3.4 (and also with TD 9.0.1.Beta1) using
ReuseVDB_Dataroles.zip model project and Readers data role:
I am using DatarolesVDB.vdb, Products_view.xmi model and PRODUCTDATA table.
1. Check Create on table column INSTR_ID.
2. Check Update on table column INSTR_ID.
3. Uncheck Create on table column INSTR_ID (notice gray checkboxes didin't uncheck).
4. Uncheck Update on table column INSTR_ID (all gray checkboxes(Create and Udpate)
unchecked).
Edit VDB Data Role dialogue doesn't check off checkboxes
properly

When I tick, for example, "Create" on one column and "Read" on the
same column and then check off "Create", the gray checkboxes stay the same. Only
after I check off "Read" on this column all disappear... screenshot attached
