I was thinking about that too but it looks like joda-time library may have similar problem - http://joda-time.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/joda-time/trunk/JodaTime/src/java/org/joda/time/DateTimeZone.java?view=markup&pathrev=1366

Unfortunately, "EST" is not NY specific - it's also Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Anyway, I'll take a look at  joda-time source code -may be we can find simple solution.
