Yes. you're right. I have been testing within the same browser session. It's possible i might have gone back and forth. I am able to register when i try it in a new window.

Regarding the 2nd issue i see the same behavior as well. Also i am redirected to the main page when i try to register an existing user id. No error messages again. 
Basically all validations on the registration page need to be checked.
