First, this should really go into Beginners Corner.

Anyway, it looks like you did not set JAVA_HOME. If you had set it, as you had indicated, then the "JAVA: java" line in the output would have read:

JAVA: /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_15/bin/java

Instead, the Java that came with your Linux distro was used, and such JVMs are not supported.

Finally, to run JBoss AS 4.2 you will need a 1.5 JDK.
