Thank you Peter, finally I have been able to resolve all the issues with the deployment of a sample portlet. 
And yes, it was related to log4J configuration.  I had not configured my custom log4J correct in jboss-log4j.xml as I had a log4j.properties in my war file and yes, I did remove reference to commons logging jar.
