In addition to what Jean-Frederic mentioned, this might even be related to  http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=149713 which got fixed in AS 5.0.1.

Which exact version of JBoss AS-5 do you use? And do you package any jars containing javax.servlet.* classes in your application? If yes, try removing them from the application packaging.
