This post is old, but is ranked high on google, so I will answer it just to save some people time.
 
I have solved the same by simple replacing driver. I had problems with mysql connector version 5.0.5, but upgrading it to 5.0.8 made it work fine. I now use 5.1.11 connector version, and it seems to work fine too.
