Here are some. No sure they are much better though:

Some simple ones:
temperature-converter: Stateless session bean
xml-dom4j or xml-jaxp: XML parsers
shopping cart: Stateful session bean

More complex:
ejb-remote: Shows how to access an EJB from a remote Java client program using JNDI
ejb-security-interceptors: Demonstrates how interceptors can be used to switch the identity for EJB calls on a call by call basis.
ejb-multi-server: EJB applications deployed to different servers that communicate via EJB remote calls
