Aside: I almost rejected this issue due to its vague & confusing title, but then decided to actually read your description and see what you meant. :) Thanks for providing a good description / steps to reproduce.

 I've renamed " luna nightly updatesite has content that does not exist " to something more meaningful and to reflect the actual issue. The site doesn't have non-existent content; the symlink points to *moved* content. The composite site works fine and references only the content which is actually there.
