As to seeing what p2 does in a simpler context, wget/curl could work, but the user could also try to simply load & browse the site w/ the p2 browser [1] to see what error message is thrown there. If the user doesn't want to build p2-browser themselves, there's a JNLP URL [2] that can be used w/ their Java Webstart client on the commandline.
