We can keep it around (I'd like to see it fixed too, eventually), but a fix will require the Eclipse platform to provide a global notification mechanism (a la growl). See https://wiki.eclipse.org/Platform_UI/Notifications and https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=229823
