I am not 100 % sure, but I think in the past cdk3/minishift would simply fail the registration (and not prompt for credentials again) if it was started with wrong credentials in MINISHIFT_USERNAME and MINISHIFT_PASSWORD env vars. So that's why we didn't worry about this scenario. You simply had to correct your credentials in the server editor and try again.
