Just confirmed that this is working fine here with distributed cache and owners=2. I can
stop/start nodes and still get user info.

Do you have both nodes fully up and running before you kill one node?
It's a bug - if session is expired it should return an error message, not a
NPE (see
https://issues.jboss.org/browse/KEYCLOAK-1710)
