CollectionMetadata should expose the method directly. Indirectly, we can do this: if (collectionMetadata instanceof CollectionPersister) { boolean inverse = ((CollectionPersister) collectionMetadata).isInverse(); ... } This works because AbstractCollectionPersister implements both CollectionMetadata and CollectionPersister, however it is not very OO.
